"Bittie -- Least Bittern"

Taken at dusk 6-Apr-2007 at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Delray Beach, Florida

After hearing that a pair of Least Bitterns had nested here and finally finding where the nest was located, I waited and waited for this guy to make an appearance and was just about to leave for the day when another photographer said that he would guarantee that the bittern would show up any moment. Sure enough, within five minutes he came flying in to the nest just behind those reeds.

Bitterns (both American and Least) are very shy, secretive birds but this guy on this day decided to sit and pose for all of us who had so patiently waited. And believe me, it was worth the wait!

I have not seen an American Bittern at this location in the last few years (though they may be around and just too well hidden). I did manage to get a photo of one in 2005. You can view it here:
